the story

Solar lighting is a necessity, not just a green alternative, for billions of villagers in the emerging, developing world, far from the electric power grid that connects all our large cities. In the US, too, people like environmental activist Ed Begley, Jr. protect the environment with a way of life depending on solar power rather than on fossil fueled power plants and cars, and we show how you can too. At sunset, darkness falls and activity ends except by a little dim candlelight, in the Andes mountains of rural Peru, near the spot where civilization first emerged in the Americas thousands of years ago. The electric power grid of Lima and other major cities is distant from these people, who only recently erected solar powered street lights so that they can continue their activities after dark. Solar lighting now makes this possible everywhere.
